Tsakane Maswanganyi
As a young girl in the 1980s, living under the apartheid regime, she was taught what to do if tear gas got in her eyes during protests in her neighbourhood. "Apartheid didn't affect me as much as it affected other people," she told Outlook producer Siobhan Tighe. "There is definitely some kind of amazing spirit in Soweto and a lot of history. Of course with apartheid it's unusual with people throwing teargas and all this stuff happening but apart from that it's just the home that you live in." In Soweto Tsakane was living with her grandparents in a two-bedroom flat, because in her family there was a tradition that young children initially lived with their grandparents who "groomed" them for life with their parents.
